USPS Postmark Date Update: What to Know

The U.S. Postal Service has updated how postmark dates are applied to mail, which may affect time‑sensitive documents.

What changed:
Postmark dates now reflect the day mail is first processed at a USPS sorting facility, not necessarily the day it’s dropped off. Because some mail may take a day or more to reach a processing center, the postmark date can be later than expected.

Why it matters:
Items that rely on a postmark—such as tax returns, legal documents, rent payments, or ballots—could be considered late if processing occurs after a deadline.

What you can do:

  • Mail important items earlier than usual
  • Request a hand‑stamped postmark at a post office
  • Use Certified or Registered Mail for proof of mailing
  • Consider electronic filing when available

Taking these extra steps can help avoid delays and missed deadlines.
